How To Deal With Difficult People Guide
67
Have you ever encountered difficult people before? The kind who makes you feel like grabbing your hair and scream out out loud?
All of us come across one difficult person or two in the course of our life. This is especially in the work place, when stress levels tend to be higher and people are more on edge. Difficult people can be defined as anyone who is hard to get along with, whether they do it consciously or unconsciously is a separate thing altogether.
While the actions to take for each situation is specific to the context, here are three broad tips to pull you out of your sticky situation:
The first thing to do when faced with difficult people is to stay calm and collected. Tearing yourself or the other person up isn't going to help the situation. If anything, it likely worsens it. The person will probably become even more resistant and become an even bigger obstacle in the future. That's why they are called difficult!
The next step is to understand the person's intents. As much as it might be to believe, it isn't that person's first intentions to make things hard for you. Usually it's a series of little occurrences which give rise to those misunderstandings. Try to understand what is the person's underlying motivation. What is it he wants to achieve? What is his desired outcome from this situation?
The last is to define a win-win situation for both of you. Talk to the person, work out a scenario which both of you are in agreement with. Let the person know you have an interest in his interests too and you want to see this workout. This will open the person up to collaborate rather than shut you off.
